Eagle Gold Mine Extension Project

Traditional Knowledge

Traditional Knowledge (TK) plays a crucial role in evaluating proposed projects like the Extension Project. This knowledge, gathered through interviews and group discussions, provides valuable insights into the local community's perspectives, practices, and understanding of their environment. When combined with scientific information, TK helps establish a comprehensive picture of baseline conditions before a project begins.

In the case of the Extension Project, TK is significant part of the overall assessment. It allows us to delve into how the Eagle Gold Mine and the Extension Project impact the FNNND’s rights, culture, and way of life. By incorporating TK into the assessment process, we ensure that the views of the local community are fully considered.

During the initial assessment of the Eagle Gold Mine, a dedicated study called the Traditional Knowledge and Use Study Report (TKU) was conducted. This report gathered valuable TK about the area and its resources, as well as the community's relationship with them. The insights gathered from this report have been important in shaping the development of the current Extension Project and guiding its impact assessment. The TK for the Extension Project is being supplemented by information gathered through the Socio-economic Study for the Extension Project.

By incorporating Traditional Knowledge into project evaluations, we not only enhance our understanding of local contexts but also empower communities to actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and environments.
